How to handle being locked out of your house calmly

Managed to lock myself out while taking the bin out—classic. I wasn’t in a rush, but the embarrassment and cold made my brain go blank. Any tips for staying calm and figuring out the next steps without making it worse? I was thinking I should probably have a backup plan saved, maybe even keep a locksmith’s number like in my phone so I’m not panic-searching at night. Just curious how people handle it smartly without damaging their own door in the process.

First, accept it happens to everyone. Check the “soft entries” you actually have permission to use—garage with a keypad, a back door that wasn’t deadbolted, or a trusted neighbor with a spare. Resist the urge to jam a screwdriver in the latch; you’ll just turn a lockout into a repair. If you’re calling a pro, explain clearly whether it’s a deadbolt vs knob, and whether it’s a timber or metal door; it helps them bring the right tools. When I used them, they tried non-destructive methods first and were surprisingly quick. While waiting, move somewhere warm and safe, and message anyone who might arrive so you don’t miss the tech when they come.
