To what extent should mural artists collaborate with architects

I’ve been wondering about something lately. When it comes to mural art in high-end houses, especially the really large, wall-sized ones, do you think the artist should work closely with architects and interior designers, or is it better to let the mural stand as an independent piece? I’ve seen a couple of projects where the artwork looked stunning on its own but didn’t seem to “fit” with the furniture or lighting choices, and it kind of ruined the overall vibe of the room. At the same time, I’m not sure if too much collaboration would restrict the creativity of the artist. What’s your take on this?

That’s a really interesting point, and honestly I think collaboration makes a huge difference, but the balance is tricky. I’ve been involved in a project where a muralist came in at the very end of construction and tried to create a big floral piece in the dining area. It was beautiful on its own, but the color palette clashed with the dark wood tones and modern lighting, and the result felt a bit forced. Later, I saw another home where the artist had been brought in early during planning, working together with the designer to align the mural with natural light and furniture placement. The outcome was so much more cohesive—almost like the mural had “grown” with the space instead of being added afterward. If anyone’s curious, I came across a site that talks about mural painting for luxury homes in Short Hills that gives a nice perspective on the process custom wall decoration: custom mural design company in short hills. In my opinion, giving the artist some freedom but also looping in architects and designers at the right time avoids the clash between vision and execution.
